Own app: YouTube is back on the iPhone

Since the free YouTube app for iOS was previously only found in the US App Store, you can officially download it since last night in Germany. The download is a good 7 megabytes in size and requires an installed iOS version 4.3 and higher. However, the app is not yet universal, that is practically useless on the iPad. Even on the higher screen of the iPhone 5, the YouTube developers still need to customize the app.

YouTube had been an integral part of iOS since the original iPhone in 2007. Since then, however, has increased not least by Android, the rivalry between Apple and Google. YouTube is now increasingly relying on their own apps and wants to control the "user experience" more self.

Apple's YouTube app may have been a thorn in the side of the Google subsidiary, among other things, because it delivered all clips without advertising. Many content personalization features only work in the new app when the user signs in with their YouTube or Google Account; in the Apple app you could also manage favorites and channels without login.
