So far, Smart Storage Systems has been selling its flash drives primarily in the US, primarily to large enterprise storage OEMs. The manufacturer has developed a rather unique software called "Guardian Technology" that can continuously monitor, modify and optimize selected and typically inaccessible NAND Flash device parameters throughout the life cycle of an SSD.
Smart Storage Systems is therefore able to produce enduring enterprise SSDs even with low-cost MLC flash (multi-level cell). The various product lines ("Optimus", "XceedIOPS", "CloudSpeed"), according to the company reach from less than one to 50 full Capacity Writes per day over a period of five years. However, these SSDs are much cheaper than those from SLC flash (single-level cell).
Headquartered in Newark, California, Smart Storage Systems was spun off as an independent company in August 2011. It is part of Smart Worldwide Holdings portfolio of Silver Lake Partners / Sumeru and will be showcasing its solutions at Storage Networking World Europe in late October in Frankfurt. Among others, Esther Spanjer, Director for SSD Technical Marketing at SMART Storage Systems and Mike Lakowicz, Vice President Sales and Marketing, are on site.spoods.de
