LED: Osram and Samsung file patent dispute worldwide

The procedures in several countries, including Germany, South Korea and the US, would be discontinued as soon as possible, the companies said on Friday. Recently, the two competitors had reached an agreement on a dispute over light-emitting diode patents in the US. Part of it are mutual license agreements. As the news agency dpa has learned from authorities circles, Samsung will make a "significant payment" to Osram, the exact amount remained unknown.

Osram and Samsung also want to explore joint development opportunities for future LED-based products. To this end, the two companies have signed a letter of intent. Osram CEO Wolfgang Dehen spoke of a "partenschaftlichen competition".

The pending patent disputes involved, for example, the use of future technology in lamps, televisions and computer and mobile phone screens. In a dispute with another Korean company, LG, Osram had scored a stage victory in June before the Hamburg district court. (Dpa / tc)
